The drawings for the cards began on sheets of music,
doodled during Symphony rehearsals. Most of the pictures were of conductors or soloists, and they
usually resembled animals – one conductor in particular seemed to always end up as a dog.
Enthusiastic reaction from colleagues and even the staff librarians (who photocopied the drawings
for posterity!) encouraged the production of still more drawings.

Grin-n-Barrett
Cards:
To fill the income gap while the
Honolulu Symphony sits in silent limbo, Paul Barrett, the Symphony’s Principal
Bassoonist, has introduced a new line of greeting cards, Grin-n-Barrett Cards.
Paul Barrett is also a Lecturer in
Bassoon at the University of Hawaii at Manoa Music Department since 1977.

He is married to violinist Judy Barrett,
Assistant Concertmaster of the Honolulu Symphony.

Mix in the amazing
powers of computer art programs and the whimsy of an eccentric artistic with a humorous
